clash of cultures.

It starts with the individual and ends with society. Prejudices.

When cultural differences meet, they determine our situational reaction. Subconscious judgments often lead to conflicts which could be easily avoided.

The clash of different cultures offers, due to the very similar values and morals, unexpected opportunities to broaden our own perspectives and horizons.
By staying receptive to new things and widening our view, we will discover opportunities to enrich ourselves and our environment in many different ways. In this process, everyone can contribute towards eliminating exclusion and segregation from social coexistence.

The project »clash of cultures« uses abstract photographic stagings to analyze and criticize the prejudices that occur in public. Nevertheless, it offers opportunities for a change of perspective and provides approaches for personal development, because each person can work on themselves.

To really make a difference, society as a whole needs to change.

// Please note that you are about to discover the Immersive Dimension. Originally, the idea was to create a »clash of cultures« itself. This led to create a printed Analog Dimension that contained only the photographs, to go along with the Digital Dimension where the texts can be found. //

reasoning.

What is the clash of cultures and how does it happen?
Let’s find out together. Here begins the immersive journey through enlightening analysis, shifting perspectives, questioning critique, and forward-looking outlooks.

Shall we begin?

resurrection.

The old familiar question: Which came first? The egg or the hen?

Which do you believe? And is the question transferable to cultures?
What came first? Prejudice against other people or a culture that formed?

Try asking yourself this over and over again all the time. From picture to picture. And also question your own thinking. Reflect on yourself. Why do you have prejudices? And yes, each of us has them. Whether consciously or subconsciously. We work with them and we evaluate. Daily.

immerse.

The question arises, why do we not always engage with other thoughts, traditions, opinions? Are we so closed and trapped within ourselves? Are we afraid that something will tear us apart, that a higher power will gain control over us?

Let’s dive into new experiences, let them come to us, without planning, without hidden thoughts. Trust me. It will be worth it. Broaden your horizon. No one will impose customs and traditions on you. You just should not consider everything in this world as set.

repulsive.

It’s normal that we don’t let new things get to us right away. It takes time for us to get used to it. No matter whether it’s new smells, tastes or moments. We always have a little spark of skepticism. And that is good and right. Do we absorb everything new directly, are we then still unique and individual? Self-determined?

A healthy measure of both, the absorb and repel makes the perfect mix. Maybe they also reject old habits of themselves sometimes. Is it not finally time to implement the constant good intentions?

temptation.

If we take what is familiar to us and reshape it, new perspectives can arise directly. New corners and edges are created. We exchange the old and allow the new to come close to us. That is what we need. This is what society needs. It is a give and take.

Don’t you sometimes have the desire to do something crazy? That thing you wanted to do for a long time but never dared to do? Why don’t you just do it?

controversial.

That which we may fervently desire. This change. This newness. It might cause discomfort in society, among our nearest and dearest. They don’t know us like this. They have always thought of us differently. It’s about rediscovering ourselves and not always listening to the opinions of others.

Cultures, their strengths and weaknesses, they can only get along with each other if there are the courageous among us. Because in the end, everything is not as bad as we think or have heard. We should form our own opinion.

separation.

Let’s take a closer look at exactly that now. How can we look at cultures, understand them, discover them. Why is it important to engage with them and the new things we so desperately need in our lives?

shared.

Over the years, we have grown into our environment. We have understood our own culture. Learned to love and appreciate it. And partly also to despise it. There is no such thing as „the perfect“. Then the world would also be very boring. It is good that we are all different. And not every individual does with another. That’s just the way it is and that’s good. But some things are made for each other. Maybe you and your partner are too. I hope so for your sake. But even if you realize, after a long time, that it wasn’t – it’s okay and it’s in the nature of things. We continue to develop. We take in the new. Our longing for it will not be satisfied.

distance.

Let’s look at our own way of life and environment from a distance. Every now and then it is important to do this. We will learn a lot about ourselves. About our culture. About another culture that we may have just encountered, that we find interesting. Maybe we also feel fear. Fear of what is coming. Of the new thing that we so eagerly need. Think of the distance. Look at the new without the prejudices you have already formed. Consider what you have learned: share your experiences. With yourself, with others. Differentiate. What is good, what is bad. And question: Is it really like that?

b-complex.

It’s the mix that makes it all. The new, the interesting, what we strive for, it consists of many individual parts put together. Maybe it is just a tiny experience we have picked up, but it can bring a lot of new perspectives. It can give us new strength. It can contain so much more. And it will do us good if we treat it right.

cluster.

Let’s look at the big picture. It is a mix of many small parts. The metaphorical glass full of newness is poured at our feet. What do we do with it? How do we sort out what is good for us? We learn so many new virtues, people, in our lives. They can all enrich us, make our lives easier. If only we let them and see the good.

further.

If we start to question things, however, we have to reckon with splitting off. Don’t get me wrong. That’s what I said at the beginning. It’s important to look at things from a distance and form our own opinions. Nevertheless, there is always the danger that individuals will split off. They are overwhelmed. They can’t process the new. But they also strive for it. They want to change something. In themselves. In their social environment. We must not lose these people. If we do, they can split off further and further. They drift into the wrong direction. They lose sight of their goal and let themselves be taken in by the new one. This is a danger. A danger that we must prevent. It is never too late. We just must not stop and stand up for them. Then we can bring them back.

perspective.

If we look at things from different perspectives, we recognize what is good and what is bad for us. We get new impressions and directions. Do this for once. Take something in your hand. You always look at it from a familiar point of view. But what if you break out of the usual. If you get engaged in it and try other perspectives. You have to twist and turn it. Then you will realize the whole potential. Use the new. Make it your new reality. You are allowed to do that. No one will judge you if you let the new into your life. But watch your ground, if you start to stagger and let yourself be pulled away from the wrong corners, you have to start fighting it.

pulmo.

With a literal cross-section, we question the things that seem so familiar to us. The things that are new to us we should treat exactly the same. There can be a good and a bad side to something new. Let’s keep our composure, breathe in and concentrate. Pulmo stands for lung. It keeps us alive. All our life energy flows through there. If we project this energy onto things that are important to us, we can discover undreamt-of potential. Also in the new. Especially here.

ambivalent.

spring.

Combine things with each other. Try to achieve perspectives that are unfamiliar. Turn and turn the things. The familiar, the unfamiliar, the trusted, the special, the scary, the depressing, the releasing, the uncomfortable, the comfortable. The new. Allow yourself the change of perspective. You need it…

summer.

… always …

autumn.

… and always…

winter.

… and repeatedly.

separation.

It’s impressive, isn’t it? What we are able to accomplish. If we just get involved. If we separate good from evil. If we face what scares us, we can rise above ourselves. It is not so bad. See the good in things. Try to approach your counterpart openly but with new perspectives.

scallion.

It’s the unfamiliar that attracts us. Isn’t it? Haven’t you often asked yourself, „How can you actually do this?“ It is not crucial whether you meant yourself or your opposite with the question. It is up to ourselves. We can create the unusual. And we should. If we discard the usual and combine such different things, something completely new emerges. A new culture? Something special!

cornetti.

As we all know, opposites attract. And they really do. The natural and the artificial. We can form the artificial. We can form the natural. We can combine them. We can separate them and keep them apart. Never let them loose on each other. Who are you to judge?

tex-mex.

Do you judge your fellow human beings. Are you too quick to judge? That which at first does not seem to belong together is exactly what we need. Prejudices destroy everything. They are like poison.

flavonoid.

If we combine two such different things, situations, people, … Cultures, it can go well. It should. It must. But what if it doesn’t? Do the components get along?
Can we do something supportive?

2-naphtylamine.

It can always happen that problems arise, that the differences first approach, attract each other. They need each other. They are attracted to each other. But do they do each other good? Does one outweigh the other? Differences can be like tumors. They can destroy us. That’s hard, yes. But we have to deal with it. We have to counteract the negative effects. We have to do everything in our power to stop hostility.

critical.

We are allowed to criticize. We must criticize. We are allowed to question. We must question. We should all do something. But how do we actually do it? Are we achieving what we want? Is what we want the right thing? Who actually decides what is right, what is important, what is void? What needs to be solved?

passion.

The evil. Do we recognize it? Can we say directly, „This is wrong“? We should look at perspectives again. We need understanding for each other. Understanding for different opinions. Everyone is allowed to have their own opinion. Whether it is right or wrong is not up to us to judge. We can only ease situations by working with learned perspectives. Only then do we often understand why something is the way it is or someone acts the way he or she does. Whether the behavior leads to the desired result is another matter. Cause and solution can be separated from each other. Far. They can have nothing to do with each other. The search for a solution may come to nothing. The problem can dissolve by itself. But can we assume that it really does?

pollution.

We cannot assume. We cannot leave anything to chance. We must recognize problems. Earlier than normal. We let ourselves go. We don’t care. Let others take care of it. We take situations for granted, express our displeasure, and then life goes on. That is not the way. That is dangerous. For us. For others. For you. For me. For everyone.

transmitted.

It is a huge danger. To take the given as this and do nothing.
Let’s look at it with calmness and concentration. Let it have an effect on us and think about it. Not too long. Not too short. The time span, even if only metaphorically, wants to be well considered. We can destroy a lot with a wrong decision. Life.

immigration.

Do we align ourselves with an opinion or do we form our own? We are so easily influenced. We are at all times. Even right now. You see the picture and you have an opinion. You read the word and you have an opinion. You internalize that text and you have an opinion. It is the perspective. Over and over again. We are afraid of it. We break out of our safe space in the process. We step out of our comfort zone. Dare to do it. Now.

perfection.

You will recognize it. When it is there. When it is ready. When you’re ready. It is already there. In you. And it has always been there. You have carried it with you. All the time. The desire. The desire for the new. Let it out of you.

dionysos.

The imperfect is the perfect.

It starts with the individual and ends with society.
